Better Building Smoko: Better Building in Practice + On Site Training Module Release

  • GJ Gardner Project Site 40 Gillespie Street Lake Hāwea, Otago Region, 9382 New Zealand (map)

Join us for a free on-site smoko session at Longview and discover practical ways to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and deliver better outcomes on your projects. This event supports the latest release in our This Is How We Build training series — a series designed to support the building industry to build smarter, cleaner, and more circular at every stage.

Whether you're a builder, site manager, architect, designer, supplier, developer or homeowner, this session offers real-world insights into what better building looks like in practice and how small changes on site can have a big impact on performance, waste reduction, costs and client satisfaction.

The Southern Lakes is one of the fastest-growing regions in Aotearoa, placing increasing pressure on resources, infrastructure and landfill. Construction and demolition waste currently accounts for around 34% of all waste generated in the Queenstown Lakes District — more than 300 tonnes sent to landfill every week. We all have a role to play in shaping how we build for the future.

This Is How We Build is a call to action to rethink every stage of the building process from inception through to end-of-life with a focus on reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, lowering long-term costs, and creating more resilient, future-fit buildings.

As part of wao's This Is How We Build training series, this FREE session (eligible for LBP points) launches On Site — a practical module focused on the decisions, processes and habits that can make a measurable difference during construction.

We'll watch a series of short, practical training films together before hearing from GJ Gardner and industry professionals about what's working on site right now, where opportunities exist to reduce waste and improve efficiency, and how these ideas can be applied immediately to your own projects.

You'll leave with practical tools, fresh ideas and actionable steps that can help save time, reduce waste and build better outcomes for clients and communities alike.

Come for the free coffee and scones, stay for the insights, and connect with others helping shape the future of building in our region.

This event is proudly supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council's Zero Waste District Programme. Head to our collections page to find other events in the series, including our Post Build event on 7 July.
