Bex and Ben Trotter
Ben and Bex both come from farming backgrounds. They studied at Lincoln University, with Ben completing an Agricultural Science degree and Bex an Agricultural Commerce degree. After graduating, they worked in commercial roles in the agriculture sector.
In 2018 they purchased land in an equity partnership with Ben’s parents. While still working their day jobs, they ran Black Peak Farming Limited, a stock and plant business farming bull beef. Six years later they are full time on the farm, growing food for the local community. When they first started, the property was set up entirely for beef finishing. The smaller farm size meant they needed to explore other options to remain economically viable.
This led to the creation of Red Bridge Berries. They turned their roadside paddock into a pick your own experience with strawberries as the main draw. The venture is well supported by the local community and the local food service industry. More recently Ben and Bex bought an existing herb business to complement the seasonal workflow and add diversity to their growing operation. This business, Alpine Fresh, grows herbs hydroponically in a controlled climate to reduce water use and produce fresh healthy and consistent quality food.
In the last three months they have also moved part of their commercial strawberry production into a modern growing facility. This allows them to maintain plant health and fruit quality without the risks of weather events.
At Wao Summit 2025, they will be one of the stops during the Food Resilience Day Tour, where participants can see their operations and hear from both Ben and Bex about all aspects of their farm.
