Wao Podcast: Nobel Prize winning climate scientist on an intergenerational mission.
Dr Jim Salinger was our 2024 New Zealander of the Year. In fact, this interview was recorded on the very last day of his 365 day reign - so we could cheekily say it was his last interview from the throne, even though he has undoubtedly done many more since.
He has devoted his research career to climate change and variability including first uncovering warming in New Zealand in the 1970s. He contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change winning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Winner of international and overseas awards, Jim is based at Victoria University of Wellington, School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Science.
In this brief interview, Jim discusses his thoughts around the current state of climate science, the challenges it faces, and the importance of intergenerational collaboration in addressing climate change. Jim emphasises the need for verified information and the role of local communities in taking action. He reflects on the progress made in climate awareness and the increasing engagement of youth in climate issues, highlighting the importance of small steps and collective efforts. Tune in!
