The Power of Partnership

  • Kiwi Harvest Depot (map)

What if food was about more than what we eat? Explore Māori food sovereignty and the power of reclaiming local food systems, knowledge and connection to whenua.

Food is more than a commodity. It is culture, identity, health, community and our relationship with the whenua.

Join Dr Jessica Hutchings as she explores the transformative potential of Māori food sovereignty and what it means to reclaim the ability to feed ourselves from our own lands, on our own terms. Drawing on kaupapa Māori research and her experience as a Hua Parakore grower, Jessica shares a vision of food systems that are locally rooted, culturally grounded and guided by Indigenous knowledge.

This session challenges the dominant narrative that food is simply something we produce, buy and consume. Instead, it invites us to consider how restoring relationships between people, whenua and mātauranga can strengthen resilience, improve wellbeing and create thriving communities.

As we face growing pressures on global food systems, this conversation offers a powerful perspective on how reconnecting with place, culture and local food production can help shape a more resilient future for Aotearoa.
